How are athlete's times calculated?  We have timers located in the pool and at the finish line to track start and finish times. Athlete's times are calculated by taking their individual gross finish time and subtracting the "scratch" time for their wave.  For example, Wave 1 will not have a scratch time as their wave is the official start of the race.  Wave 10 may have a 35 minute scratch time because they started 35 minutes after Wave 1. An athlete in Wave 10 who crosses the finish line when the clock says 55 minutes would then have a net ("official") 20 minute finish time (55 minutes - 35 minute scratch time = 20 minutes).
